Portrait of a post revolutionary French gentleman

Finely portrayed French gentleman. He is wearing the Decoration of the Lily which was a medal awarded by Louis XVIII for fidelity to the crown during the revolution. (Napoleon had abdicated in 1814.) To the side is portrayed a guillotine and the words “Timor et Spes” (Fear and Hope) alluding to a quotation by Seneca. 69 cm high x 55.5 cm wide. £750.
