18th century canvas of Leda and the swan

20141206_090342The Greek myth of the seduction of Leda by Zeus, in the form of a swan, was prominent during the Italian renaissance. The subject remained largely confined to Italy, and sometimes France.

This hand-woven canvas has been re-framed and initial restoration carried out (cracked paint on the figures has been touched in with a white preparation). Leda is shown against an Italianate landscape, at the water’s edge with another woman. Both are partially draped in rich fabrics and both appear entranced as they look upon the swan. Dimensions 79 cm x 109 cm. SOLD.
